Archive Series Volume IX – Freedom Lane Experiment, Part II

Then there were three…somewhere along the way we found what we were looking for. Bruce had passed through and anointed the proceedings, then disappeared as quickly as he had arrived. Yet, there were ghosts to excise and dreams unfulfilled…what was left of Freedom Alley still yearned to complete the journey.

Chris had almost single-handedly taken over the reigns of leadership, albeit one without control. He had filled a vacuum spiritually and musically that we knew we had to follow. We were in good hands…his experiments with new sounds and direction walked right in step with the lyrics that were being spilled forth. Unfettered by the demands placed on the Freedom Alley of old, we were driven to new heights of exploration and discovery. We couldn’t wait to turn on the recorders and capture it all, whether we were plunking down some practice melodies, re-playing some of the old songs in new ways, or those magical nights when we knew something incredible was about to happen. It was all catharsis and Freedom Alley was living up to its name.

We reveled in the thought that exploring those deepest, most intimate thresholds of the soul was where we were being called to. The execs from the label left us alone and we had no contractual obligations to hold us down. This was our time to journey inward with the purest of intent and the intensity of the moment. Each of us fed off the other, with no one orchestrating a thing. It was all about the sound being able to capture the words…and on this venture of the Freedom Lane Experiment, we think we accomplished just that. Yea, a bit heavy…but, that’s the ledge we needed to be on.

Chris not only exploded musically, but began to reveal himself lyrically as well. Walt continued the intense relationship with his mind that had always amazed us with his expression, his gift and his ability to ride the unknown. Wally raised the level as well, bringing in some of his most personal lyrics to date and singing with such reckless abandon that only helped to propel the sessions wildly beyond expectations. In truth, there were no expectations and no preconceived notions…only the need to continue this journey together.
