Archive Series Volume V – Nothin’ But The Blood
Yeah, well…this stuff was the meat and potatoes of what we did for a certain period of time back then. We were half just mixin’ it up and half deluding ourselves into thinking our ship had come in. No matter how you figure it, we felt good about what we were layin’ down, whether we worked on a particular number over and over or came up with something out of thin air. Hell, half these numbers were flat out jammin’ off some notion that floated in through the window. Others were early run-throughs of songs we somehow never found the time to revisit, although they still felt good enough to make the cut. Either way, we walked away feeling like we had nailed what we touched and after all these years, there’s no one who can take that away.
One of the sounds that jumps out on this collection is the smooth, angelic harmonies we were able to capture. Truth is, we pretty much stumbled on our voices blending and never gave a thought to formalizing the magic. Now, there are some pretty sour notes for sure (takes an avid fan to digest the background harmony on ‘Don’t Push At Nothing’) and some of the lead vocals could even make you cringe a little, but when we were on there was no one better at doing what we did and if nothin’ else you could say we gave the songs justice. Somehow, that seemed to be all that mattered and if we could grab hold of the feeling, capture what was in our hearts and minds, and then lay it down, well…wasn’t that what it was all about? Leastwise, we thought so and maybe you will too.
All of this natural harmony, sweet sound, and easy flow wasn’t manufactured, learned from a book, or even copied from someone who might do it better. Truth is, this is pure Freedom Alley…both rehearsed and improvised with blemishes and all. Like the first cut says, this is the meat and potatoes…with a litlle gravy in the bowl and nothin’ but the blood. Hope you enjoy this volume and we’ll see you on the next one.
