Walking With Moses
The window of opportunity had a breeze blowing through and we knew it was time. When I pulled out of town, only a few people knew what I was doing and that was fine. There was no itinerary, simply get thee hence and I did.
Took much longer than the calculated six hours to get there. Must’ve stopped to explore a hundred times just on the way out. Set the GPS to the next desired town and let the little lady inside guide me to the very center. Leg stretches became walking tours wherever I stopped and there was a magic in not knowing what would happen next.
By the time I arrived at the Exxon station at the base of the mountain, I was dog tired, but quite happy to be in the dark, on all levels. One last hairy, winding mountain ride and I pulled into my new home. Unpacked a few things and went inside to explore, relax and crash.
Long time coming and a long way to go.
Something to be said for blocking out all the distractions of life and, as we all know, there’s generally a lot to block out. The silence grows and for me it is one of the most spiritual experiences to have. You become forced to listen to your own thoughts. You are speaking to yourself and if you’ve been successful at blocking things out you really must make your own decisions. Imagine that. No help. No outside influences. Just you and what you bring to the table.
In the end, it’s between us and our maker, so I figure as much as we can straighten out with ourselves, the better chances we’ll have when we meet our maker. Contrary to tweets and facebook posts, fake news, targeted marketing and the like, if each of us tried, independent thinking could really make a comeback.
Contemplating within.
Regardless, I was alone and contented to be exactly where I was. My work is different now and I’m not required to please any bosses. I’m proud of the years of work I put in…the things I accomplished, making it up along the way to keep my head above water, pleasing others with my talents and contributing to a bigger piece of the pie with my home grown, crusty ways.
These days, I’m trying to pay a little more attention to myself and if the day pleases me, it’s been a good day. Oh sure, there’s my wife to please, although she’s so happy what’s hard to please? Family and loved ones are still part of the deal and if I can help them, please them, bring them a smile, it’s what I’m all about.
So, think of others. Don’t forget that you owe everything you are to the folks who helped you get there. It’s been a team effort all the way and any selfish thoughts wreck the day. Do for others and think community, like old townships with one flashing light and everyone knows by Sunday morning what you did Saturday night.
Any questions?
Then again, you’re no good to anyone if you can’t please yourself, especially if you find yourself all alone at the top of a mountain. When you and the architect of this beautiful landscape sit down together, you’ll do good to have your act together. I’m sure Moses had to believe in himself just to make it up the mountain. I’m not Moses, but I sure got a taste of things up on Snowshoe.
